Have you started a blog but don't know what to write about? Well, I know the feeling. I started this blog with every good intention of writing three times a week. I write on another blog BizInformer almost every day (sometimes twice a day) and then when it comes to finding something to say here, my brain goes blank.
So I put together a list of ideas. Here are a few tips for when you are struggling with a topic:
- Consider setting up a schedule of “themed days:”
- Library Day: Write a book review
- FAQ Day: Answer a frequently asked question
- Story Day: Share the story (good or bad) of a customer experience
- Definition day: Define a term or concept that people in your industry don’t understand
- New Trends Day: Share something new in the industry
- Visit Ezine Articles and check out what other people are writing about. You can republish their content as a blog posting as long as you give credit and link back to the article. OR you can mention the article – comment on one section of the article and then suggest to your readers that they follow the link to read the entire article.*
- Visit Technorati and type in a key word or phrase from your industry and see what OTHER people are saying. Then, just like the Ezine articles, share your views on the subject, give them credit and link back to their post.
- Join Stumble Upon. Stumble Upon is a random search engine that allows you to select a set number of topics of interest. Then every time you hit the Stumble Upon button on your toolbar a different site, blog, PDF file or article will appear. You never know what you’ll find – but chances are, you’ll find something blog-worthy.
- Rethink your life experiences over the last few days – can you relate a personal experience to your blog audience?
- Make a list: 10 ways to say thank-you, 7 things to do before you call your accountant.
- Visit Todd Add’s Power 150 Marketing blogs and just go hunting through the most popular marketing blogs in the world.
So now I'll take my own advice and start writing more often.
QUESTION: Do you write on more than one blog? How frequently? What other suggestions do you have?
Deborah Chaddock Brown
Chris, That's a really good question. Clearly, I haven't been writing on this blog and need to because when you don't write, people tend to move on and forget you. Thanks for not doing that. But trying to write everyday just so you have a new post can become more of a burden than the pleasurable experience I think blogging is meant to be. Some of the bloggers I read only write once a week and when I see a new post I am more interested in what they have to say than a daily blogger because I know they only post when they truly have something to say. You've given me food for thought.

Deborah:
Funny that this post should move me to comment once again!
When I start running dry, I find myself reading a lot more than posting. Or my posts bring other people's posts to the forefront. Perhaps that's healthy? What
do you consider the right amount to post each week?

Deborah:
Good post! I think every blogger hits the writers block from time to time and your post is a great help.
My favorite blog starter when I'm feeling "blank" is to do a google blog search on my favorite phrases.
Lately there has been so many spam blogs picking up from other real blogs that my technique has been failing, so your list is a big help. Thanks!
